Statement on Yugoslavia/Kosovo
19 April 1999
The International League of Religious Socialists (ILRS) demands:

•the withdrawal of all Serbian troops from Kosovo;
•an end to the NATO bombings
•the safe return of refugees
•that UN peacekeeping forces enter the area to protect ethnic and religious groups, and to uphold democracy.

The International League of Religious Socialists has sent letters with these demands to the United Nations, NATO, President Milosevic, and President Yeltsin.

The ILRS calls on the United Nations Security Council to arrange a meeting with the parties involved to end the war and to solve the refugee situation. NATO is asked to reconsider the bombing campaign in view of the results it has had. The International League of Religious Socialists calls upon the countries of NATO to establish a comprehensive cease-fire.

The council of the European Union is asked to speed up the humanitarian aid to the refugees and to strengthen UN´s role as the foremost organisation in the drive to establish peace in the world.

We call upon President Slobodan Milosevic to withdraw his forces from the region of Kosovo and to enter into meaningful negotiations to facilitate a peaceful solution. We also urge President Yeltsin to use his good offices to mediate in the conflict.

Finally, the International League of Religious Socialists calls for the rapid establishment of a UN Conciliation Committee, to resolve this and other conflicts in the world.
